The Floating Deck

The rowing club RIC located in the Amstelkwartier requires a new building on the original site. A two storey building is proposed with a rectangular footprint. The ground floor is a concrete box which is used to store the rowing boats, with doors directly open to the dock on the riverside. The first floor has wooden structures and sits on top of a overhanging concrete deck. The overhanging part of the deck is a balcony that almost fully encircled the building, providing a great view in all directions while also functions as a sun shading. Moreover, it also creates a subtle transition between the exteior and interior. Perforated corrugated metal panels are added as extra sun barrier for the glass facades on the first floor.

A restaurant which is accessible for the public and a ergometer room designated for club members, two main functions of the building, oriented towards the water. When the sliding doors are open, the restaurant is fully connected with the deck, where people could enjoy rowing competitions.
